ALLUSION IN JANE EYRE This paper will focus on the use of allusion that Bronte has made in her novel Jane Eyre. The novel is written in first person. The novel has in it elements of the gothic. The gothic novel is an amalgamation of romance and terror. The tradition started with Horace Walpole’s novel ‘the castle of Otronto’. Bronte uses elements of this tradition in Jane Eyre. Jane Eyre digresses from the other novels, written over a four-year period, largely because of Brontes use of images, symbols, and allusions. At the end of part three Jane and Rochester are again united in a garden, this time at Ferndean where reference to the horse-chestnut ties the two scenes together. The language now echoes Genesis. Rochester says: We must become one flesh without any delay, Jane (570). She later reflects: No woman was ever nearer to her mate than am I: ever more absolutely bone of his bone, and flesh of his flesh (576). Rochester compares himselft to the shattered horse-chestnut at Thornfield and Janes response ties in another edenic theme, one derived from Paradise Lost. My Time As Volunteer At Somerset Dade Academy - 898 Words

During my time as volunteer at Somerset Dade Academy, I was able to work closely with the elementary and middle school teacher. During each visit, I was able to follow Ms. Lee’s daily routine. In the morning, we had 30 minutes to plan and get her cart ready with supplies she needed for the day. Also, we would both create various model artworks to inspire her students to create something more original and imaginative. She wheeled her cart through certain elementary classes depending on her schedule. Depending on the grade level she was assign to that day, we were able to teach her students the fundamental concepts of arts and major art movements, all in 30 minutes. Every three weeks, she would focus on a concept, artist, or art movement. Additionally, she would assign vocabulary words, which her students would copy and also had access to them online on Quizlet. At the end, she would administer a summative test on everything they learned for the past three weeks. On the other hand, Ms. Lee’s middle school classes were different, more one-on-one, and it was a one-hour period. Her students were able to recreate impressionist and expressionist artworks, such as Monet’s Water Lilies, Van Gogh Starry Night and The Bedroom on wall-sized canvases. Despite the diversity of art concepts taught, it can become quite difficult for one teacher to teach 23 elementary classes and 11 middle school classes. Can Machiavellis Prince be a Good Christian? [Many] have pictured republics and principalities which in fact have never been known or seen, because how one lives is so far distant from how one ought to live, that he who neglects what is done for what ought to be done, sooner effects his ruin than his preservation Hence it is necessary for a prince wishing to hold his own to know how to do wrong, and to make use of it or not according to necessity. (Machiavelli, 62) Machiavellis suggestion to rulers to sacrifice virtue to win and maintain states has rought his political treatise, The Prince, both attention and contention for the past five centuries. While condemned for the ruthlessness and cruelty that it espouses, The Prince has been hailed as the first modern political treatise for the meticulous warfare and statecraft strategies it prescribes to the rulers. It is a sprawling discourse on how a king needs, not ought, to behave in order to maintain his kingdom; Machiavellis Prince is a strategist whose decisions are based on calculating reason rather than on any abiding faith in morality or virtue. His overarching rgument is to value, in order to achieve and hold power, being feared over being loved, being cruel over being kind, being parsimonious over being generous, and so While other texts in the wisdom tradition Platos Republic and Aurelius Meditation, for example emphasize the importance of a ruler being good and Just, Machiavelli concerns himself solely with practicality, dismissing the philosophical tradition of holding rulers to moral perfection. Under the light of comparison then, it is easy to dismiss The Prince as an aberration in the history of classical philosophy; fter all, it never came to be read by a ruler and Machiavelli himself saw little political success in his life after writing it (Machiavelli, p. 9). Yet, interspersed through The Prince are phrases like without burdening the people (Machiavelli, p. 4) which make the reader wonder at the engaging struggle between what he prescribes for the king a relentless and amoral pursuit of reasoning and strategy and what he hopes the king will achieve for his populace, which is overall stability and peace. At stake is a fundamental rift between what Machiavellis Prince does to win and maintain states, and why he does it. Machiavelli prizes a kings use of far-reaching vision to achieve victory that easily dispenses with questions of morality. Yet, he is acutely aware of the king being kindly to his subjects, mentioning several ways in which the king can win and maintain favor with his population, even if that is with an eye on maintaining power in the state. A king who but not in what he provides for his population. Machiavellis treatment of virtue as dispensable in exchange for a greater aim has brought his views on Christianity into extensive discussion; Stanfords Encyclopedia f Philosophy pays homage to this ancient discussion by citing several prominent philosophers who hold competing views on Machiavellis perception of religion. Some claim that he was profoundly anti-Christianl while others believe the opposite, citing the central biblical themes [that] run through Machiavellis writings, [and which include] a coherent conception of a divinely-centered and ordered cosmos in which other forces are subsumed under a divine will and plan2. This paper complements this discussion by evaluating The Prince under the light of the Gospel y Matthew and establishing that Machiavellis prince is unchristian as a person but Christian in his duties as a ruler and in what he provides for his people. On the relationship with the nobles Machiavelli states that there are two distinct parties in each city the nobility and the people, or the masses and his advice on warfare and statecraft treats each very differently (Machiavelli, p. 43). He is aware of the different roles that each part of the population plays in bringing a king to power and in keeping him there. He is deeply suspicious and mistrusting of the nobility, seeing in their ambitions an inherent onflict with those of the masses. At each step of the process of winning and maintaining power, he emphasizes this conflict of interest and overwhelmingly supports favoring the masses over the nobility. While coming to power, he says it is better to come to sovereignty with the aid of the people rather than that of the nobles; the nobles consider themselves a rulers equals while amongst people, there are none who are not prepared to obey him (Machiavelli, p. 43). Overwhelmingly then, Machiavellis cruelty is directed towards the nobility and, in xtension, other counselors and lords in the kingdom. He advices kings to put those nobles to death whose ambitions are misaligned and not subservient to themselves; in particular, he hails Cesare Borgias strategy of executing Ramiro, a lord, in order to prevent him usurping excessive authority. If the nobility in a princes kingdom can be compared to the apostles who Jesus delegates the task of proclaiming his message, then Borgias treatment of the nobility lies in stark contrast to Jesus treatment of the apostles. Jesus trusts his apostles completely, entrusting them with the responsibility f healing people in his absence. He also takes them in full confidence, addressing them directly instead of talking to them in parables like he does with his people. Machiavellis expectations of absolute loyalty from the nobility is similar to Jesus expectations from the apostles, yet his mistrust and suspiciousness of their ambitions force him to be cruel and selfish enough to kill his fellow rulers, an action deeply in contention with the way Jesus treats his own fellow men. must be treated differently and selectively based on their strength, their usability, nd the support they lend to the kings kingdom. This is in addition to the blanket advice to never, never let a strong king take power in the neighborhood. He again uses Cesare Borgias example to demonstrate the right way in which to balance severity with kindness towards kings in the neighborhood (Machiavelli, p. 35); Borgia knows how to gain friends and soldiers, get the population to love and fear him, and eliminate those who can or will harm him. His severity towards enemies revolts against yet another tenet of Christianity that asks people to love their enemies and o kindness unto them (5:44). On the relationship with the people In contrast, Machiavellis treatment of the masses is less consummate with absolute cruelty. While he still prescribes a Judicious use of violence to keep the population in fear, his actions are much more motivated by the desire to maintain stability in and gain favor with the population rather than by any abject sense of mistrust. A Machiavellian ruler is at various times portrayed to be a protector of the people, a defender of their way of life, and sometimes Just a leader who keeps them in order. He states that a king is better protected if his population loves him, claiming, The best fortress for the prince is to be loved by his people, because if he is hated by them, all the fortresses in the world will not save him (Machiavelli, 83). He ponders over the difficulty of maintaining control over a state if the populace hates its king, stating several times that while the king can use his armies to fend against external danger, all of it will be in vain in the face of the internal threat of an unhappy population. Happy, however, is an ambiguous word in the world of Machiavelli. It seems that, for Machiavelli, subjects in a society derive happiness partly from being able to maintain their old ways of life (Machiavelli, 28) and partly by being loyal to their king (Machiavelli, 65). To maintain stability and fealty in his population, Machiavelli advises the prince to use force Judiciously; he must prefer being considered clement and not cruel (Machaivelli, 65), but still not be lenient enough to let this clemency allow the country to go to ruin. In the larger scheme of things, then, Machiavelli says a king much not mind the reproach of cruelty; because with a few examples [of ruelty], he will be more merciful than those who, through too much mercy, allow disorders to rise (Machiavelli, p. 65). Furthermore, he claims that if there are factions of the population that seem threatening, the king must be ready to use force to swiftly and surely suppress any signs of rebellion. This, he says, is better than letting any seeds of discontent from turning into a war (Machiavelli, p. 3). Needless to say, Jesus of the Gospel according to Matthew would never espouse such actions. In stark difference to a Machiavellian prince, Jesus expounds the virtue of urning the right cheek (Matthews, 5:39). Jesus attitude towards the people in his kingdom is that of absolute benevolence and his actions preach tolerance and Famously, he also says that those who use the sword must perish by the sword. A Machiavellian prince, in stark contrast, uses h is sword to maintain peace in his kingdom and to inspire fear in his people. As a leader, Jesus also deals extensively with the private lives of his followers. He is privvy to their troubles and extends his help to each and all. He extends the message that helping others is to welcome God into the home. Machiavelli, in contrast, overwhelmingly supports non-interference in the moral lives of the subjects. He makes no mention of the king having any obligation to reform the population. He believes instead that a leader must let the newly acquired subjects maintain their way of life so as to minimize any cause of rebellion (Machiavelli, p. 9). In all his dealings with people, Machiavellis prince must project himself to be a paragon of generosity, loyalty, humaneness, integrity, and scrupulousness (Machiavelli, p. 70). This again lies in stark contrast with Jesus who tries to hide his iracles and his kindness, and also expects his followers to do the same (23:23), for Jesus does not have any need to parade his kindness, while Machiavellis prince needs to use it as a weapon of persuasion and popularity.

Dan Gable Dan Gable is recognized many as the greatest amateur wrestler in U.S. history. He is known by many to be a good coach, wrestler, and friend. He was regarded as the nation's most successful wrestling coach. Gable is a brilliant wrestler (Garlits 34 and Lippy 161). Dan Gable was born on October 25, 1948 in Waterloo, Iowa. He started his wrestling career in junior high school. He then attended West High School. While at West High School Gable went on to improve his wrestling skills by winning three straight championships in a row (Garlits 34). Gable continued his wrestling career at the college of Iowa State. During his years at Iowa State he won the NCAA 130-pound title as a sophomore and the 137 weight class as a junior. He was named outstanding wrestler of the tournament. Gable was undefeated going into his final match of his senior year. At this point he was 180-0 for his high school and college career. Gable fought his way to the NCAA finals with ease, but he lost his last match (Garlits 35 and McCallum 509) Gable's last match was against Larry Owings in 1970. Owings was a sophomore from Washington State College. Gable was winning by two points with twenty-seven seconds left. He lost the match when his opponent Owings threw a four-point move. Owings was the only man to defeat Gable (Garlits 35 and McCallum 509, 510). Although Gable's loss to Owings was a big defeat, he did not stop wrestling. Gable went on to win all of his international matches; he qualified for the Olympic Team beating Larry Owings 7-1 in the trials. Gable worked hard. He was devoted to win the Olympics. Gable won the 1973 light weight Wrestling Olympics with ease. No one scored a point on him (Garlits 35, 36, 37; Looney 499; Johnson 133 ) Dan Gable, the brilliant wrestler from America's midwest, says, Sometimes people seem to think the Olympics is track and field, and maybe swimming. Or, in the winter, figure skating. It is a lot more of different sports. My gold medal means as much to me as a sprinter's means to him. There are a lot of wrestlers and weight lifters and volley ball players, a lot of skiers and gymnast and field hockey players who sacrifice a lot of their lives and work hard and suffer a lot to get goo at what they do, and maybe they don't get much out of it, maybe not any publicity over an Olympic year, no attention, no money, no fancy offers, probably not even a medal. (Lippy 161, 162) Gable retired from wrestling after the Olympics. He had the greatest amateur wrestling career in the U.S. history. Gable then went on to be a coach for Iowa University. It is at Iowa University where he has given his greatest contributions of coaching (Garlits 34, 37). Gable started coaching at the University of Iowa in 1977; it did not take long for him to achieve a good name for himself. He led Iowa to win sixteen Big Ten championships and eleven NCAA titles (Garlits 37 and Looney 499). Gable's life consists mostly of wrestling, but he also shares that life with his family. His wife Cathy and three daughters Jennifer, Amy, and Molly have been there for him throughout his career (Looney 497, 515). Gable had to take off from coaching for the 1998 season. He had surgery on his hip-wrestling has taken its toll on him. He has had surgery on almost every joint in the human body. Gable was so intense as a young athlete that he did not care if he was hurt. He just wanted to wrestle (Garlits 36, 37 ). One of Gable's biggest motivations was his older sister. She was murdered by a neighborhood boy. The tragedy inspired him to excel. Gable feels the loss made him stronger (Looney 515). Dan Gable has had a brilliant career that will never be forgotten by the sport of wrestling. Most people acknowledge that porn is not something young children should view and although there are ways to prevent it, no method is infallible. Pornography caters to users with various sexual preferences and to some it can be helpful in stimulating arousal that leads to masturbation or intercourse. Pornography depicts sex acts that consenting adults frequently participate in and thus can present sex as being something common, natural, and enjoyable. While to others, it can present sex as being unnatural, repulsive, and sickening. Pornography fight s against sexual repression and guarantees the freedom to sexual expression. The circumstances surrounding the debate on pornography cross ethical, social, religious, psychological, and cultural boundaries. It is argued that pornography decreases the desire and appeal for long-term traditional relationships. Judaism requires women to dress modestly while the ancient Hindu text, the Kama Sutra, depicts sexual behavior in ways considered today to be porn. Feminists argue that it is a violent exploitation of women and promotes chauvinism, and that it leads to abusive relationships and makes men more likely to rape women. A common view is that pornography is degrading to women. This statement is an opinion. Ones perception of pornographys depiction of sex is related to their own sexual experiences and their views on sex. Some women might say that porn is degrading if their own sexual experiences have left them feeling objectified or used or if they have been sexually assaulted. In this case, the idea of sex itself might be the issue and therefore the depiction of sex might remind that woman of her own negative experiences. Other women who have had positive sexual experiences and frequently enjoy sex might be excited by porn and see the depiction of sex as a reminder of their own positive and satisfying experiences. Not all pornography portrays females as being passive participants or simple sex objects. In many cases, the woman is not just giving pleasure, she is receiving it. The presentation of women enjoying sex and orgasming shows sex to be natural, healthy, and pleasurable not something to be ashamed of. Pornography can depict sex as something romantic and emotional or as an act between adults who love each other. The view that pornography is degrading to women disregards the views of women who create porn whether by writing it, producing it, or acting in it. It also disregards the pornography that illustrates a womans perspective of sex and porn that is aimed at female audiences. Many women willingly participate in the production of pornography whether for mass distribution or for private viewing. Many women also enjoy watching pornography alone or with their partner(s). Pornography is harmful to relationships is another view. The Flood article (393-394) states, US studies find that a consistent minority of female partners of male regular pornography users find it damaging both for their relationships and themselves. They see their male partners pornography use as a kind of infidelity, feel betrayal and loss, feel less desirable, and describe other negative effects on their relationships, sex lives and themselves (Bridges et al., 2003). First, this is a minority of females and the article does not state how low that minority is. The minority could be 10% of Latino or 3% of Caucasian females. A perception of porn use harming a relationship may point to fundamental flaws in the relationship that are only made more visible through porn use but do not exist because of the porn use. For example, the woman might believe her sex life is floundering because her partner is using porn rather than her to satisfy his sexual needs, but the man might be using porn because he is dissatisfied with the woman or disinterested in her. In this case, it is not the porn that is harming the relationship; it is the lack of communication between the partners: the man isnt open about his dissatisfaction so the woman sees the porn as causing the mans disinterest in her rather than being a result of the disinterest. On the other hand, the man may be interested and sexually attracted to the woman, but pornography offers a form of arousal that cannot be found elsewhere. A relationship could be sexually vibrant but the introduction of pornography may illicit unique sensations that overwhelms the male and makes the woman feel less valuable. Pornography may benefit relationships, as sex can be a very important aspect of a relationship establishing and maintaining closeness, giving each other pleasure, satisfying each others sexual desires, expressing affection, etc. A couple (married or dating) might watch porn in order to get aroused prior to engaging in intercourse. But one may argue why a healthy couple would need to watch something to illicit arousal. Pornography can be used to spice things up for the couple giving them ideas of new positions to try or inspiring role-playing scenarios. The statement that porn harms relationships is too broad. The information available on the harmful effects of pornography on relationships seems to be focused on heterosexual relationships while ignoring homosexual relationships. Another view is that pornography makes men more likely to rape women. The Flood article (393) talks about studies that show a correlation between teenage boys frequency of consumption of porn and their agreement with the idea that it is acceptable to hold down and force a girl to have sex. However, the ability of parents to block their children who are minors from viewing porn on the internet or TV while at home may diminish the frequency of porn. Even though minors can acquire pornography from outside the home (from friends, on a different computer, etc), if adults teach children starting from a young age about sex, its need to be consensual, its consequences, and the importance of respecting women and people in general, then young boys attitudes toward sex and females may very well be unaffected by pornography. Nevertheless, even if all young boys were taught in this way, they would not all absorb the important lesson. Other factors such as peer or media influences play large roles in young boys attitudes towards sex and the treatment of women and those would need to be controlled as well. Flood (392) also states that men who frequently use violent or rape porn are more likely to report that they would rape a woman if they could get away with it. This does not necessarily mean that the porn is planting the desire to rape a woman. Perhaps the man who would rape a woman watches the porn in order to see a fantasy that he cannot realize. In this case might the porn be somewhat satisfying the mans desire to rape and preventing him from doing so in reality. However, violent porn can give violent or sexual offenders venues to act out their fantasies. The watchers of violent porn may gain inspiration to go and act out their fantasies on innocent women. Flood cites Malamuths writing that men at high risk for sexual aggression are more likely aroused by it and more likely influenced by it (392). But what percentage of men are at high risk for sexual aggression? Does the predisposition to sexual aggression guarantee that the man will rape or assault a woman ONLY if he watches porn? Or does watching porn create sexual aggression and violent feelings towards women? This view is also strewn forth in the media. Barongan and Hall conducted a study where males listened to neutral or misogynous rap music before viewing sexually violent and neutral vignettes (196). They would then choose a vignette to show to a female. Their reasoning for the study is that misogynous messages appear in the media and they can contribute to negative attitudes or behaviors towards women. And pornography has been defined, by some, as sexually explicit materials that can evoke sexually abusive and degrading treatment of women. Some men may believe that their own sexual aggression against women is justified because it is seen or heard in the media, and if so, their actions are not wrong because they are common. The study showed that of males that listened to misogynous rap music 30% showed the violent vignette to their female. Surprisingly only 7% of the males who listened to neutral rap music showed the assaultive vignette. Viewing pornography that glorifies sexual coercion is particularly degrading and harmful. Is sexual coercion degrading to women? If you use random association with this statement, it can easily lead you to agree with the statement. Coercion is to force, compel, or persuade. If women are coerced into sex in pornography, it seems easy. Who is persuaded easily? Unintelligent people? Children? Therefore, women are stupid or as ignorant as a child for being coerced into sex. Non-normative sexual activities falling into the sexual coercion category such as BDSM (Bondage/Domination/Sadism/Masochism) are practiced by both women and men. To say that depiction of sexual coercion is degrading and harmful is to pass judgment on those people who participate in BDSM. Why shouldnt people with non-normative (but still legal) sexual desires have pornography available to them that is suited to their desires? BDSM can be viewed as strange or weird. Why not judge them for being weird? If only a small ma jority of people participate in BDSM, why are their views of sex important to the rest of the population. Sexual coercion and even rape are common themes of sexual role-play among consenting sexual partners. To depict sexual coercion in pornography is to depict a real life scenario within consensual sex. I believe that pornography has beneficial effects for some and harmful effects for others. Do I believe that pornography is degrading to women? Generally speaking, no. However, films that are violent or disturbing in nature, depicting women enjoying these acts that probably no one would enjoy taking part it, I feel is degrading to women. I think that sexually there are things that no woman would want to be involved in, and to show that some people would do so can humiliate and lessen the value of such person. Pornography that that simply depicts intimate and erotic acts, I do not think is degrading. As for pornography creating a prevalence of violence in men or having influences that compel someone to commit rape, I think it is very possible, but it is a person to person issue. I think men who through watching porn think it is okay to force intercourse upon someone will eventually think that regardless of if they have viewed porn. Some people are predisposed to being violent towards women in many other ways than pornography, and although pornography is not the route cause, it can definitely attribute. Non-violent men who respect women and have had meaningful relationship will not have suddenly commit rape after seeing pornography. I think it could evoke thoughts or fantasies similar to acts depicted in the porn they watch, but they will not go out and rape or take a life. I do believe that pornography can damage relationships, but once again, it can have the opposite effect depending on the individuals. I have heard of problems that pornography has caused in friends relationships. I have seen it stem from the fact that women in pornography have physical attributes that are exaggerated to increase sex appeal. I understand that women can feel subpar to the women in the films because they dont look a certain way or compare to these women in societys opinion. I believe the adult entertainment industry can be a contributor to self-esteem or image problems of young women today. Moreover, self-esteem and confidence issues play a huge role in the successfulness of a relationship. On the contrary, I have heard of pornography helping relationships by adding something new to a fading love life. Pornography can spice up a love life, or ruin one. It can illicit arousal for intimacy or to commit a sexually violent crime. Pornography involves acts that are very instinctual to us and therefore can evoke strong judgment towards both ends of the spectrum. Similar to abortion or euthanasia, it is important to find middle ground, and to encourage imaginative thinking where people will not rush to say pornography destroys relationships or causes rape, but it can destroy relationships and may give someone the idea to rape.

“Carpet Weavers Morrocco” by Carol Rumens Essay

Rumens, through the title of her poem is portraying a scene in Morocco, consisting of carpet weavers. This establishes a theme of work which runs throughout the poem. The title however, does not launch or even give a faint idea of the major theme contained in the poem, i.e. of social injustice and child labour. The poem begins with ‘The children’, hence taking us by surprise. Nowhere in the title was anything about children expected, the natural imagery created had been of workers weaving carpets who had naturally been assumed as adults. Nevertheless, the poem starts with these gifts of God, startling us into the reality that the poem is about these intimate pure creations. The first line of this stanza implies that these children are hard at work on the ‘loom’ used to create the carpets. On the other hand it precedes the words ‘another world’, which could change the meaning aroused by ‘loom’ into that which is on the verge of, hence implying that the children were right around the corner of another world. The ‘another world’ here is denoting the difference in the life of these children to other normal children, signifying their harsh lifestyles. The word ‘loom’ can also be visibly rhymed with the word gloom, thus pointing towards the glum atmosphere of these children. Their hair is shaped into ‘braids’ show that they have been twisted and trapped into this situation from where it is quite difficult to unravel themselves. These braids are ‘black’ and ‘oiled’. This shows that they have been seeped and covered with burdens, because of which their lives have become ‘black’, i.e. darkened and glum. Still their ‘dresses’ are ‘bright’, which points towards their childish character, implying that they may not be treated as children, but the brightness and cheerfulness of their character is still present behind all these obstructions. ‘Assorted heights’  assert that the children are of various ages. By saying that they make a ‘melodious chime’ it is signifying that when normally children of many changes accumulate together they play and their laughter creates a beautiful music. The use of the word ‘would’ however, reminds us that this is n ot the case here, as these kids are not given the customary freedom provided to most kids. The second stanza replicates the feeling of pity that had been aroused during the first stanza. The children ‘watch’ their ‘flickering knots like television’, is a simile indicating that unlike most children who watch television with apt attention, these children watch the sparkling colours of these strings going in and out of the carpet board instead. In addition the only colour and sole entertainment in their life are watching these knots coming in and out and forming magnificent designs. The ‘garden of Islam’ signifies paradise and hence peace. It is also implying that the carpets being made are the Islamic prayer mats that are usually decorated with heavenly beautiful images of paradise’s gardens. By saying that this garden is ‘growing’ the poetess is trying to ascertain that as the carpet’s design nears completion, the children will be raised to reach the higher portions of the carpet. On the other hand it could mean that as Islam grows, the burden on the children increases In addition it could be taken in the sarcastic manner to mean that as Islam grows instead of the justice system ‘the bench’, taking the side of the children it raises their benches so that they can finish more work, thus their state never becomes better. The children after being raised ‘lace’ the ‘dark-rose veins’ of the ‘tree tops’, shows that the children still put all their efforts, colours and enjoyment of life into the carpet. The specific colour of veins as ‘dark-rose’, state their delicate nature of the children which show in their carpet designs. Lacing these designs of the ‘tree tops’ show that the children are trying to reach the tops and the canopy of the world, but instead they are forced to replicate and design these high elevations instead of physically being able to reach them. The carpet then ‘travels’, and receives all the pleasure and comforts of  travelling. The carpet is also given the luxurious treatment in the merchants ‘truck’ as the merchant needs to take care of its products. Then it is ‘spread’ by the ‘servants’, denoting the royal treatment of comfort imparted on these carpets. The words ‘deep’ and ‘soft’ signify the sensation that arises from these carpets, and point out their comforts. This all shows that only the carpet is receiving the comforts, and only the carpet is seen and felt not the children or their hard work. The fact that it ‘gives’ when ‘heaped with prayer’ indicates that the carpet is the support and receiver of all the prayers. This shows that the carpet is the basic receiver of the prayers and not the children, hence emphasizing that nothing is being done about the state of these children. The last stanza of the poem finalizes the melancholic and serious condition of these children, who are working ‘hard’ in the ‘school of days’. This signifies that these children who should be going to school, which are the golden and fun days of our life, are in fact forced to work hard when they should be playing and studying and having fun. The poet states that ‘from their fingers the colours of all-that-will-be†, this phrase is actually emphasizing on the fact of kids being the future of the country, and the people who give colour and beauty to this harsh lifestyle. Nonetheless the use of the phrase ‘all-that-will-be’ comes to make us realize that this future is still yet to come, but the use of the caesura in between all the four words affirms the poet’s declaration that this is not possible and something is stopping this reality from occurring. These colours of the children ‘fly’ from their fingers and try to reach the sky however, they ‘freeze’ and die into the frame of the carpet. This shows how their creativity is only limited to the carpet and the carpet alone. The phrase ‘all-that-was’ is actually a means of connectivity with the previous phrase ‘all-that-will-be’. These two phrase work together to portray two meanings. Firstly that the carpet is recording pictures of the past and things that have already happened. The other is that of marking a major contrast between the job of a child and what these children are forced to do. As the child is the future but here they are being required to remain in the past and replicate it instead of helping to create a new future. Carol Rumens, Carpet-weavers, Morocco, consists of three stanza’s each of the same length of three verses. Written in the second form, the poem barely uses any rhyming techniques except for once in the first stanza, ‘bright’ and ‘chime’. This rhyme impresses upon children happiness and how it takes the form of brightness and happiness in the world. The poem is basically evoking the dismal and serious atmosphere surrounding these children. The themes running throughout the poem is of childhood, work, social injustice, poverty and child labour. This has been achieved magnificently through the use of clever diction.

It was like a super nice winter wonderland, it was like a fairy-tale to me. I also had never seen such a big supermarket that sells everything you need in and around your house, that was overwhelming. I love how the trains works so easily in here, the train tickets also. What I was hoping for to learn in the youth houses was; how did they work there, do they work like special youth workers? What kind of youth was visiting the houses? How can I be in contact with the kids (because one of the girls who went to Finland the year before we did said that it was hard to make contact with the youths because it was a total different culture). And I wanted to learn about the Finnish culture. I think I can say I’ve accomplished all of these things by now. How do they work in the youth houses: in my opinion they work totally different, they are more like normal youth workers. The Triangle Fire Essay On November 22rd, 1909 Clara Lemlich of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union provokes, through her words, a general strike of Women Garment workers1. Within two days of her speech, 20,000 shirtwaist makers had walked off their jobs. By February of 1910 most of the companies recognize and grant the demands of the union. All except the owners of The Triangle Shirtwaist Company, Max Blanck and Issac Harris, while they agreed to shorter hours and higher wages, they refused to recognize the union, and their concessions did not equal those of the other business owners2. Then, on March 25th, 1911 the most tragic event of New York City’s twentieth century occurred; a fire broke out in the Triangle Waist Company. This horrific loss of life was observed by many onlookers and resulted in the tragic demise of 146 workers, mostly young woman immigrants who either burned to death, or chose to die by jumping from the eighth, ninth and tenth floors of the Asch building3. This fire and the public observance of lives lost was the greatest tragedy of the time, it had a direct impact on society, it led to political reform and most importantly, changes in legislation that ensured the reform of the work place across our entire nation. This observed tragedy united a society that until then was divided by cultural and economical differences. On April Sixth, 1911 over 350,000 people participated in the funeral march for the seven unidentified victims of the fire. Mrs. Raymond Robins the head of the National Trade Union League traveled from Chicago to take part in the processional. There was representation from   the suffragists, and the Socialists, the poor and the rich. In the pouring rain, people from all cultures, races and religions gathered to pay respect for all the lives lost4. These people and people across the nation, having seen or read about this tragedy came together and united to ensure nothing  like this would ever happen again. The public outcry following the fire stirred the politics and the politicians of this time. No one wanted to take responsibility for the tragedy. The governor of New York blamed the city, the mayor refused to even visit the site, political cartoons bashed the current leadership and controversy prevailed5. The city government had in the past worked together with the police to protect the Triangle Shirt Company and it’s owners. The party of Tammany Hall quickly realized they would need to change their position, and focused on a new stance of reform6. These leaders who historically supported boss politics, were collectively responsible for this tragedy and be it through guilt, or public demand they led the change and were themselves, changed by the tragic fire. The public outcry and demand for reformation of the workplace was finally being heard and acted upon. Pushed by the already publically developed and supported Committee of Safety, the party of Tammany established The Factory Investigating Commission (FIC), which led the legislation and laws related to workplace reform. The commission mandated workplace health and safety by establishing workplace laws and regulations related to fire prevention and safety, woman and children, sanitary conditions, work hours, injury   prevention, compensation, and the construction and use of buildings; the commission implemented and was responsible for the changes that the people had demanded. The young workers that perished in The Triangle Fire were among those who initially fought for the reform, they unwillingly gave their lives for the cause. It was however, this loss that led society to demand safer working conditions. Because of these 146 souls work became a safer, fairer place for all people. A Deeper Look into Eva Brauns Life Before and After Hitler Essay

When the war originally began, the Braun sisters were just young girls growing up in Germany. The sisters were Gretl, Ilse, and Eva. The three Braun sisters grew up in Munich. Their parents, Friedrich Braun and Franziska Kronberger, were just an average Catholic, middle class family. Friedrich and Franziska had relationship issues, but worked them out for the sake of their family and financial reasons. Finances were very limited during that time. During WWI Gretl, Ilse, and Eva had no idea how their lives would be changed in just a short amount of time, especially Eva. Ilse was the first born child of Friedrich and Franziska. She was born in 1909. Unlike her other sisters, she wanted no involvement in the war or politics. She stayed very distant from the issues facing Germany. Ilse left her home when she was only twenty years old and began to work as an assistant for a doctor. Ilse and Dr. Marx shared a special relationship. They not only shared a work relationship, but also a passionate relationship outside of work. Their relationship never grew to be more because of his emigration to the United States in 1938. Ilse married twice during her life. She was wed to lawyers in both of her marriages. Ilse was diagnosed with cancer later in her life and died in 1979. She is buried in Munich. Eva was the second born child. She was born on February 6th, 1912 in Munich, Germany. She is the most well-known of the three sisters. She was an all-around girl growing up. She was competitive with her grades and athletics while in school. When Eva was finished with school, she began working as a photography assistant for Henirich Hoffmann in Munich. This is where she met Hitler for the first time. Eva Braun was not just an average German woma... ...egarding that awful night. This is a prime example of how blood is thicker than water. Adolf wasn’t there that night to take care of her. He was too busy planning and scheming ideas of how he could wipeout an entire, powerless race. If he would have been more concerned with his personal relationships, maybe he would have not formed into such an evil man. Adolf Hitler is the main fire behind WWII. Interview with and Research on an Alzheimer’s Disease Patient

I chose to interview my father’s aunt, who is 85 years old and suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease. The reason I chose to interview her is because she is at Stage 6 of the disease, which means she is at the mid to severe level. At this stage, she is manifesting almost all the symptoms of the disease but is still verbally active. Alzheimer’s Disease is a progressive, disabling degenerative disease which has no cure. There are however, drugs such as tacrine and donepezil that can slow certain symptoms of Alzheimer’s.However, our patient has not received any treatment for the disease as she does not believe in drugs and does not realize that she is suffering from anything other then old age. Alzheimer’s Disease 4 Interview with and Research on an Alzheimer’s Disease Patient The Interview Our patient is an 85 year old Caucasian female, residing in Ontario, Canada. She currently lives with her daughter. Her husband passed away about 10 years ago. She has a college education and was once an elementary school teacher. She suffers from stage 6 Alzheimer’s Disease, which means she has lost almost all her cognitive abilities, but still is somewhat verbal.She shuffled into the room with the assistance of my aunt, whom she resides with. As she entered the room, I caught her eye and she gave me a friendly smile, but showed no sign of recognition. After she comfortable seated herself across from me, I started asking her questions. When asked about her name, she smiled excitedly, almost like a little girl, and answered â€Å"Agnes†. Agnes is her correct name, so she does remember certain things about herself. I went to ask her about her age. She looked at me with a puzzled look on her face and said, â€Å"Do I know you?†.I told her who I was, but she still did not seem to show any sign of recognition. I enquired about her age again. She ignored my question completely and said, â€Å"My dad must be getting very worri ed about me, I should get home. † I informed her that she was home, with her daughter. Her face took on a distressed expression and she starting insisting on calling her â€Å"dad†, who passed away about twenty years ago. I attempted to change the subject and asked her about her gender, to find out if she remembered that piece of information about herself.She giggled in a childlike manner and stated, â€Å"I’m a girl, silly! †. When asked about what she does, she said she goes to high school, and wants to become a teacher some day. The patient seemed to have lost almost all her short term memory and had regressed to her teenage days, a symptom commonly associated with Alzheimer’s Disease. Surprisingly enough, Agnes remembered her birthday, and that her favorite person in the world was her Alzheimer’s Disease 5 mother. She could not recognize the very commonplace items in my hand, however, a paper and pen. She then went about asking me for a b rownie.When I answered that I hadn’t any, she accused me of lying to her. I informed her once more that I hadn’t any brownies, but I would be more than happy to get her some, if she so desired. At this point, the patient’s face went completely blank and she began staring into space and stopped answering any questions. . Judging from this short interview, it is evident that the patient’s cognitive abilities are severely impaired and she needs constant care and supervision. Due to the fact that Alzheimer’s is a progressively degenerative disease, her condition is only bound to worsen.There are plans for hiring an in-home caretaker for the patient in the near future. Definition of Alzheimer’s Disease Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive degenerative disease of the brain, with unknown causes and cure. It is characterized and associated with clumps of neorofibrils and microscopic brain lesions, disorientation, confusion, memory loss, speec h disturbances and eventual loss of all mental capacity. Patient suffers from loss of mental function. Origin: The disease was first discovered by accident in the year 1906 by a German physician called Dr. Alois Alzheimer.When she passed away, an autopsy it was discovered that there were dense deposits called neuritic plaques around her nerve cells and neurofibrillary tangles inside the cells. Theories Regarding Alzheimer’s Disease: There is more than one theory attempting to explain the causes of Alzheimer’s disease, although the exact cause is still undecided. Among the existing theories are age, family history and genetics, head injuries and heart disease. Alzheimer’s Disease 6 Pathology of Alzheimer’s Disease: Clearly visible in AD brains are amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles.The disease comes from severe atrophy of certain regions in the brain, including the temporal lobe and parietal lobe. Levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine are r educed, along with the levels of seratonin, somatostatin and norepinephrine. There is a loss of neurons and interfrence with neuronal processes in the cerebrl cortex and other regions within the brain. Signs and symptoms of Alzheimers Disease As observed during the interview and research process, our patient suffers from advanced stage symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.Signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, which may manifest themselves as early as in an individual’s 40s or 50s, include but are not limited to the following: Forgetfulness to the extent of interference with normal everyday functions. Impaired speech. Difficulty reading and writing. Anxiety and agression. Recollection of very old events, and forgetting recent ones. Loss of control over urinary and bowel moevements. Eventually, complete loss of cognitive abilities and verbal speech. A return to an earlier stage in life. ComplicationsThe patient often opens the front door and walks out, stating tha t she is going home to her father, which puts her at great risk for an injury or becoming lost outdoors. On certain days, she becomes aggressive and refuses to get out of bed to go to the bathroom. This causes hygeinic complications because she is not in control of her bowel Alzheimer’s Disease 7 movements. Patient wears adult diapers and often suffers from diaper rash. Patient does not recognise family or caretakers, including the daughter she lives with and often becomes aggressive with them.Prognosis Eventually, patient will lose all congnitive and verbal ability. In-home care will be needed in the near future as it is becoming more difficult for her family to provide her with proper care. The patient is having more and more trouble moving around. Evetually she will become completely bedridden and may in the future suffer from related complications like bedsores, etc. Loss of cognitive abilities will also cause the patient to suffer from malnutrition, for she is slowly for getting how to chew, suck, etc.Therefore, she will probably need to be fed through a nasogastric tube. ADLS Patient cannot function through every day life without extensive assistance. She attempts to but cannot groom herself. She has lost all control over her urinary and bowel movement, and neglects her hygeine. The patient needs to be bathed by another person every day. Her skin is thin and translucent, but that is commonly associated with old age. She has trouble feeding herself and needs to be fed by another person; she often forgets how to chew or swallow.

India being a strong democratic country doesn’t really need a dictator. It may just lead to disruption. India is a big country. People live in harmony and are known for their unity. A dictator may not be able to maintain this. Few people may again misunderstand dictatorship and may think it defies the purpose of freedom. Dictatorship may bring very short term changes. A country needs a strong government. Dictatorship may introduce communal differences depending on the community of the dictator. Human rights can be certainly bypassed. It may lead to disorganization and malfunctioning of the law and order system of the country. For A dictator can easily help us get rid of the dirt in politics. A very small community of people actually understands the meaning of democracy and don’t make misuse of it. For over decades, India is trying to get rid of poverty, may be, a dictator can help in this aspect. A dictator can help the citizens realize the meaning of democracy and freedom. Whether a country has a dictator or not, freedom of speech and rights is what matters to any citizen. It is a myth that smaller countries usually need dictatorship. We cannot forget the smaller country has the same human species with the same human rights as in other countries. When Indian people feel they have no stake in a system (they really won’t have a stake, because there is no MLA or MP they can go to in case the bureaucracy strikes at their rights), they will take to protest. A dictator will not allow non-violent protests most certainly, so they will take to violent protests someday. That will only mean violence and secession. India’s experience shows us that it is extension of democracy which solves our problems, be it in Mizoram or to an extent now in Assam, not dictatorship or army rule as seen in Kashmir. If India had a dictatorship earlier during the time of independence, states like Tamil Nadu and Assam as well as North-East would have done all to secede somehow. Thankfully, because democracy was there and Nehru believed strongly in it, we accommodated regional aspirations and that is why those issues were solved. And our issues can only be resolved in this way. Now ethical. I agree that a dictator can take decisions quickly, and democracy is always messy, not just in India but in general anywhere. But development is nothing without equity, because development is for whom? Human beings. And it should be for all. And it’s their right to have such stake, every human’s right. So democracy will be messy when it takes into consideration every human’s right in each and every development issue. But that equity in taking decisions is as much important as the decision itself. That is democracy. We have to accept it. It can’t be one man show or one party show.
